
Beyond the Tool - The Third Paradigm Shift in AI Products

The past two years have seen nearly every work-focused AI product share the same form: a chat box. Type a prompt, get an answer. Repeat.
That makes sense. Conversation is the most natural interface, and the lowest barrier to showing off what models can do. Write a prompt, get a response — instant gratification. For many use cases — writing copy, summarizing meetings, generating code — it works.
But zoom out to how work actually happens, and that chat box becomes an invisible trap. It hasn't solved the hardest part of work. It's just given that part a more efficient wrapper.
The Real Problem at Work Isn't Generation
Writing a paragraph, generating a report, making a deck — these are outputs, not the hard part.
The hard part is: knowing what matters today, deciding what to do next, keeping things moving across multiple stakeholders, remembering a detail from a meeting three days ago, noticing a deal going cold, catching the gap between what's promised and what's actually happening.
These aren't "generation" problems. They're "propulsion" problems.
When you open that chat box, you still need to hold the context in your head, stitch things together, judge what's important. You just got a smarter typewriter.
That's why many people feel the same way: AI made them faster, but the day didn't get easier. Responsibility didn't shrink. Fragmentation didn't go away. Work still falls through the cracks.
The model isn't dumb enough. The product just quietly handed back the job of "keeping context" and "pushing things forward" to you.
Three Types of AI Products
After watching enough products, I've come to see the current AI landscape clearly into three buckets:
Type 1: One-Shot Task
User inputs once, model outputs once. Classic examples: AI writing tools, PPT generators, image creators.
The catch: users need to dump a lot of information into each turn, prompt quality matters, accuracy depends on how well they express themselves. The output is immediate — use it and move on.
Simple, but high barrier, inconsistent results, high ongoing user involvement.
Type 2: Context-Driven
User provides complete, concentrated context first, then AI works within that context. The classic case is coding assistance — Copilot, Cursor, stuff like that. These have matured significantly.
The core advance: users give enough context in one go (codebase, project structure, requirements), and AI can reason across the whole context. Dramatically lower barrier, much better accuracy and completion.
This is the hottest space right now, where people most feel the "AI efficiency boost."
Type 3: Long-Term Tracking
Building on context-driven, but going further — not focused on immediate tasks, but oriented toward long-term goals, autonomously driving the whole process forward.
This means: AI needs to understand what the ultimate goal is, needs to maintain consistency over long time spans, needs to proactively judge deviation from the goal, needs to continuously suggest and execute next steps.
A qualitative shift. From "you tell me to do one thing" to "I'm helping you achieve a goal."
The Essential Difference
Type 1 products, with equivalent user input, produce equivalent outputs. When everyone uses the same tools and same prompting approaches, outputs converge. This is already very obvious in copywriting and image generation.
Type 2 is the main battlefield. Scenarios like coding have proven: give enough context, and AI can do far more than single-turn interactions. Barrier drops dramatically, efficiency improves by orders of magnitude.
But I think types 1 and 2 are fundamentally still tools. Their core value is "producing digital products more intelligently and faster."
Type 3 starts showing essential change: it's no longer helping you "do" something, it's partnering with you to "achieve" something.
The Legal Contract Story
A concrete example:
One-shot task: User describes their legal problem, AI gives legal advice. User needs to ask repeatedly, each time adding new context, each time getting an isolated answer.
Context-driven: User inputs all relevant contracts, describes their ask, AI gives targeted legal advice based on the full contracts. Accuracy and relevance jump significantly.
Long-term tracking: User inputs all relevant contracts, sets a clear negotiation goal — "close the best deal within three months." AI not only understands the contracts, but creates a negotiation strategy, continuously tracks progress, responds to every counterparty move with the optimal legal advice at that moment, until helping the user reach their goal.
The key difference in type 3:
- AI needs to understand what the "ultimate goal" is
- AI needs to stay loyal to the goal over long cycles
- AI needs to proactively judge current state vs. goal
- AI needs to continuously offer paths forward, not just one-off answers
Technical Requirements for Type 3
To build products in this category, you need several core capabilities:
Context mastery: Collect, remember, understand, weave, retrieve, analyze. Not just store, but retrieve and combine at the right moments.
Goal comprehension: Help users clarify and define their ultimate goal, then track it relentlessly through the whole process.
Process reasoning: Combine tracing and reasoning to maintain granularity in proactiveness. Know when to push, when to wait, when to remind.
Continuous output: Don't just give one answer and exit. Keep offering the best advice for the current state, constantly adjusting as the process evolves.
Feedback iteration: Continuously receive user input and feedback, especially heuristic insights that drive meaningful iteration. The user isn't just a data source — their strategic pivots, changed priorities, and "what if" questions are signals that should reshape how the AI approaches the goal.
Cost efficiency: Running over long cycles means the cost structure must be sustainable. Can't burn equal tokens on every interaction.
What's Happening Right Now
Recent trends are validating this view.
Google's agent design docs explicitly mention: multi-agent systems need each agent to maintain specific context to complete complex tasks. This is fundamentally solving "how to maintain consistency and coherence over long cycles."
Anthropic's context engineering piece points out: long-cycle tasks require agents to maintain coherence, context, and goal-directed behavior across time spans far exceeding context windows.
Projects like Mem0, focused on AI memory layers, have gotten a lot of traction. Their core problem: "how to accumulate and leverage context across multiple interactions."
What products like Manus are doing is essentially letting AI agents autonomously plan and execute across much longer task spans.
All pointing in the same direction: AI is evolving from "answering questions" to "propelling things forward."
A Small Conclusion
One-shot task and context-driven remain tools.
Their value is certain: making digital product production massively more efficient. But they haven't fundamentally changed the human-AI relationship — you're using a tool, it follows your instructions.
Long-term tracking is where AI products start becoming "service."
It begins providing continuous value output, not one-off deliverables. It starts taking responsibility for "propulsion," not just "generation." It shifts from "you do it" to "we achieve it together."
That's the direction we're exploring.
