If you’ve tried most modern AI tools for work, you’ve probably had the same experience: they’re impressive in the moment, and strangely unsatisfying an hour later.
They can summarize a long thread. They can draft a thoughtful email. They can turn a messy meeting transcript into something readable. And then… you’re back where you started. Because the work didn’t move. The decision still isn’t made. The follow-up still isn’t sent. The stakeholder who matters still hasn’t engaged. The loop is still open.
That gap between “a good suggestion” and “actual progress”, is where most productivity tools quietly die.
It’s tempting to blame the models for this, or to assume we just need more intelligence. But after watching how work really flows across teams, I’ve come to a different conclusion: the main bottleneck isn’t generation, it’s execution orchestration. In high-leverage work, what matters is not what you could do next. What matters is whether the next step gets done, on time, with the right people, in the right sequence, with the right context attached.
The “Last Mile” Is Where Work Breaks
Most of the pain in modern work sits in the last mile: turning intent into action.
A thread ends with “let’s do this”. Nobody assigns an owner. A meeting ends with “we’re aligned”. The actual work becomes “I thought you were doing it”. Someone says “send me the deck”. The deck gets sent, but the real decision-maker never sees it. Legal asks for one clause change. It sits in an inbox for four days because nobody feels responsible for driving it across the line.
These aren’t extraordinary failures. They’re normal. And what’s frustrating is how small the actions are that would have prevented them. A follow-up written the same day. The work isn’t the writing. The work is the management of momentum over time.
That’s why so many “AI for work” experiences feel like a productivity demo rather than a productivity shift. They produce output, but they don’t take responsibility for outcomes.
Work Isn’t a Static Workflow — It’s a Living System
At this point, someone usually says: “Okay, so we need automation. Let’s build workflows”. Workflow automation is useful, but it breaks down quickly in high-leverage work because the environment changes constantly. Sales cycles don’t follow a fixed path. Partnerships don’t progress in a straight line. Leadership decisions don’t resolve in one meeting. Even within the same team, the next action depends on timing, relationship dynamics, stakeholder incentives, and subtle signals that never appear in a task list.
This is the core mismatch: most workflow tools assume the world is stable enough to predefine the sequence. Real work isn’t.
A system that requires users to maintain elaborate custom workflows is basically asking them to become the ops team for their own productivity. And that’s exactly what people don’t have time for, especially the people doing high, value work. So the question becomes: if work is dynamic, how do you orchestrate execution without forcing the user to program their own life?
The Only Thing That Can Orchestrate Dynamic Work Is a World Model

Humans should contribute validation and critical signals, not be burdened with defining and maintaining workflows step by step. That kind of operational overhead is not where human leverage lies, and very few people are willing to sustain it.

One subtle reason chat-first products struggle is that they teach users to think in prompts. And prompts are a terrible abstraction for day-to-day work.
People don’t want to become prompt engineers. They want to ship. They want to close. They want to move. So instead of asking users to define their own workflows through prompting, we think in terms of skills and tools, repeatable capabilities the system can call when the context graph says it’s the right time.
Follow-ups are a skill. Deal risk detection is a skill. Meeting-to-action conversion is a skill. Preparing a presntation is a skill. Stakeholder mapping is a skill. “Get me back to momentum” is a skill. The user shouldn’t have to script these from scratch every day. The system should handle the mechanics, and bring the human in at the points where judgment matters.
That’s the real line between “AI that feels fun” and “AI that feels like relief”.
The End Goal Isn’t Efficiency. It’s Reliability.
When people talk about productivity, they often mean speed. But if you’re doing high-leverage work, speed isn’t the constraint. Reliability is.
You don’t lose the deal because your email draft wasn’t polished enough. You lose it because the loop wasn’t managed. You don’t miss the launch because you wrote too slowly. You miss it because dependencies drifted without anyone noticing early enough. You don’t fail to align a team because the words weren’t good. You fail because alignment wasn’t maintained after the meeting ended.
This is why I’m convinced the future isn’t “AI that generates better.” It’s systems that carry work forward, quietly, continuously, across time, grounded in context, and tied directly to execution.
A personal context graph is the personal 'world model'. Traces are the grounding. Execution orchestration is the bridge to outcomes. Without that bridge, AI stays in the realm of suggestions. And suggestions don’t change your life.
