
The AI-Native Era Is Here

If you’re in a role where outcomes depend on people, timing, and follow-through—not just producing an artifact—there’s a specific kind of exhaustion you’ve probably learned to tolerate.
Your day starts with a handful of “quick checks” in your head while you scroll on your phone and somehow turns into a dozen threads you didn’t ask to own. You skim a Slack channel, answer a few emails, join two meetings, and by lunch you’re already behind, not because you didn’t work, but because you’re carrying ten half-open loops in your head. Someone said “let’s do it” last week. Another person is waiting on “one more internal approval.” A third stakeholder is quietly disengaging. None of this shows up clearly anywhere. You’re the one holding the situation together.
This is the part that’s surprising to many people about the last two years: AI is everywhere, and yet for a lot of professionals, work doesn’t feel lighter. It often feels heavier. Not because writing is hard, or because drafting messages takes time, but because modern work is a continuous effort of maintaining context—understanding what matters, what changed, who’s waiting on whom, and what must happen next to keep momentum alive.
In 2025, one domain broke through this barrier in a very visible way: coding. Tools like Claude Code shifted from being “helpful” to genuinely moving work forward. But the interesting lesson wasn’t simply that the models got better, or that code lives in a concentrated context. The deeper lesson is what made the work environment runnable.
Claude Code doesn’t just consume the current state of a code repository. It can read the trail: diffs, commits, and the history of how a system became what it is. That trail is where intent lives. It’s where trade-offs are documented, fragile areas are exposed, and risk becomes legible. In the real world, the present state is almost never the full truth. “How we got here”, the decisions and signals along the way, is what determines whether the AI’s reasoning and actions are safe or reckless, and when AI can understand that, it can contribute in a way that feels grounded instead of guessy.
Just as important, it behaves less like a chatbot and more like an old-school, competent engineer who knows how work actually gets done in the most fundamental way: break down the task, write notes, writing and executing code step by step using Unix tools and plain text, verify, then continue. That doesn’t sound like a breakthrough. But it actually is. Because the value isn’t only intelligence, it’s the ability to run a loop, not just answer a question. It’s a process of simulating a specific role.
That’s why coding improved first: the environment already had traces, a clear workflow, and tight verification. Work became something that could be managed end to end.
Most work, however, doesn’t look like coding.
If your job is sales, partnerships, fundraising, leadership, operations, product, or any role where outcomes depend on continuously interpreting valuable signals, coordinating with others, making judgment calls, and driving executions, your output isn’t something that compiles. Your output is momentum. It’s decisions getting unstuck. Stakeholders staying aligned. The right follow-up happening at the right time. Risks surfacing early. Opportunities not slipping away quietly behind polite replies.
And right now, the systems we work inside are hostile to that kind of work.
Context is split across Slack, email, meetings, docs, spreadsheets, and “that conversation last Tuesday.” Commitments get made casually and vanish into scrollback. The real reasoning behind a decision rarely gets captured—only the conclusion does. Status is visible only in fragments, and the truth is usually in the gaps between tools, products and platforms. So the work doesn’t move through a system. It moves through people.
High-value professionals become the glue layer. They reconstruct reality every day: summarizing what happened, reminding everyone what was decided, chasing the next step, preventing drift. It’s not a failure of discipline. It’s a structural tax that modern work imposes—the fragmentation tax. The cost of constantly rebuilding context just to keep progress alive.
This is also why many AI tools built for narrow, sliced-up work scenarios often leave you with a subtle sense of friction and disappointment. The tools can generate content beautifully. They can summarize threads, draft docs, rewrite emails, and sound smart doing it. But they don’t reduce responsibility. After the summary, you still have to decide what matters. You still have to follow up. You still have to convert text into action, action into coordination, coordination into an outcome. Instead of feeling supported, you can end up managing both the work itself and the AI tools, cleaning up after them along the way.
So the next breakthrough won’t be “smarter chat.”
The next breakthrough is managed work: AI takes ownership of the entire loop, guided by a role-aware system built around the user. Systems that can continuously hold context across time, recognize what’s changing, surface what matters, and drive the next step until there is a real outcome, not just a polished output.
Not “help me write this.” Something closer to: “This is something I need to act on quickly. This deal is cooling down. Here’s what changed, here’s who went quiet, here’s the risk signal, and here’s the next action I can take right now.”
That shift requires more than a bigger context window or a longer prompt. It requires continuity, a persistent model of your working world: the people, the things, the commitments, the priorities, the risks, the actions, and how they evolve. Once that exists, work stops feeling like a firehose you’re reacting to and starts to become a system that can run continuously, centered around you.
Coding got there first because concentrated context, accessible traces, and a strong simulation of the engineer role were already built into the environment with AI power. The rest of work is next.
And when it happens, the difference won’t show up as “you got more productive.” It will show up as relief: fewer dropped threads, fewer invisible commitments, less chasing, less context reconstruction. More clarity. More momentum. More outcomes.
